The ensemble was founded in 2002 by Rolf Beck.  At that time, he was still serving as director of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.  By founding this young elite ensemble, Rolf Beck created a counterpart to the Orchestra Academy, which Leonhard Bernstein had launched many years before. After stepping down as director of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2013, Rolf Beck began to pursue this idea of creating a highly qualified academy of international voice students under the name Internationale Chorakademie Lübeck. The high quality of this ensemble, especially in the past few years, has allowed more and more solo parts within individual programs to be filled by singers from the ranks of the choir.  Besides the Academy phase each year, the International Choir Academy Lübeck also performs several times a year throughout Europe and worldwide at renowned festivals and in popular concert locations.  Additionally, the Academy maintains partnerships with orchestras and artists across the globe i.e. Christoph Eschenbach, Kent Nagano, Roger Norrington, Adam Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Tan Dun, Yu Long, Peter Ruzicka, Helmuth Rilling, Simon Halsey, Eric Whitacre, Fazil Say, Bobby McFerrin, Martin Grubinger, NilsLandgren, Reinhold Friedrich, the ensembles Calmus and Vocal Six, and many others.
